"Our His-story as a Japanese"

For my friend HANE Masanori, who had been my friend since high school in 1976
HANE died at 6:00 a.m. on September 11, 2016.
On July 17, 2016, I finally went to see HANE at Toyama Prefectural Hospital.
HANE was extremely angry that I had come.
He said to me:
“Why did you come? I told you by SMS a month ago not to come.”
I could not answer him.
Two weeks before that, I had called HANE’s wife in Toyama from Tokyo.
I knew from an SMS from HANE himself that his tongue cancer, which he had suffered from since the 1980s, had gotten worse and that he had been urgently hospitalized. But I could no longer get in touch with HANE.
She did not like me, so this was almost the first time we had ever talked at length.
At the end of our conversation, she said to me through tears:
“Please, ARAI-san, go and see HANE. My husband says he doesn’t want to see you—or any of us. But please go and see him. And please tell his friends from high school that he is no longer in good condition.”
She and HANE had met at Niigata University.
So she did not know many of HANE’s friends from his high school days in Toyama.
HANE had never invited us to his home, so I had never met his two sons or his daughter who lived in Toyama, either.
That day, a nurse tried to stop me. I told her, “His wife asked me to see HANE. Please call her and confirm it,” and I opened the door to his hospital room.
HANE was extremely angry with me.
Because of his tongue cancer, he could hardly speak.
Waving both arms, he shouted at me:
“GWA! GWA! HA! GU!”
He looked almost like a performance artist.
Then he wrote something on a piece of paper, but I could not read his handwriting clearly.
HANE blamed me for some of his friends coming to see him, because, he said, I had told them to come. I somehow understood what he meant.
He said that meeting those friends had made him very sad.
So, to HANE, I was a very, very bad guy.
I was angry with HANE, too.
So I said to him:
“Then that’s enough. Goodbye. I won’t come again. If I don’t come anymore, I’m sure you’ll get better.”
Soon after that, I received an SMS from HANE.
“I’m a loser, so leave me alone.”
I immediately replied:
“You are such an idiot. You are not human. Do you call my mother, Fudeko-san, a loser too? For the past five years, she has been in the hospital, unable to move, unable to eat by mouth, and unable to speak.”
HANE replied:
“I don’t want to listen to the words of a drunk like you.”
I sent HANE this message:
“I was driving today, so I didn’t drink any beer. I’ve just started drinking now. Goodbye, you fucking idiot.”
After that, I continued to send HANE an SMS from time to time.
“Are you still in the hospital?”
HANE replied:
“I’m in the hospital.”

Sunday, September 11.
Early in the morning, I received an SMS from HANE.
At first, I thought HANE had recovered and gone back home.
I opened the message.
It was from HANE’s son.
“My father, HANE, died at 6:00 a.m. today.
The wake will be held the evening after tomorrow.
The funeral will be the following morning.”
I decided to attend the wake.
But I could not cancel the work I had that day.
So, after finishing work, I took the Shinkansen to Toyama, where HANE’s wake was being held.
On the Shinkansen, a friend in Toyama called me.
“What time are you coming to the wake? It has already started. More than 100 people are here.”
I said:
“I’ll arrive around 9 p.m. Can you wait for me?”
He said:
“I can’t stay after the wake is over.”
I said:
“Why not? It’s the wake party, isn’t it?”
He said:
“It’s a wake. It’s not a wake party.”
I understood the difference a little.
I arrived at the funeral hall around 9 p.m.
There was nobody there except HANE’s family and relatives.
I prayed and looked at HANE’s dead face.
────────
HANE was a senior official of the Toyama Prefectural branch of the All-Japan Prefectural and Municipal Workers Union (Jichiro).
I think he was a very well-known person.
That is why so many people came to his wake and to his funeral the next day.
But to me, HANE was simply my friend from high school, when we were both members of the art club.
He had many older friends at Toyama University. (I think this was probably because he had relatives connected with the Socialist Party.)
Thanks to him, we, the members of the high school art club, could easily get tickets to underground films by directors such as YOSHIDA Yoshishige and TERAYAMA Shuji, as well as underground tent theaters, organized by students at Toyama University.
For me at that time, those things were extremely shocking and stimulating.
HANE had been my friend since high school.
And yet, at the end of his life, he said, “I’m a loser.”
